We’re in search of an effective leader to join our team as the Vice President of Fund Management. In this pivotal role, you’ll be instrumental in driving our long-term success, overseeing our Fund Management team and leading the execution of critical fund and portfolio management activities. You and your team will ensure the effective management of our growing family of funds, optimizing their performance and aligning operations with MDF’s mission to reimagine capital as a tool for change. 

You are an analytical wizard who is excited by the opportunity to oversee fund and portfolio management at a fast growing asset management platform. You understand private credit and structured finance, and have experience working on private funds. Spreadsheets are your happy place and you have a strategically analytical mind that can both conduct complicated analysis and draw strategic insights from data across a fund’s lifecycle, including watching the investment pipeline relative to capital calls and distributions, tracking financial and impact covenants, and working through a range of what-if scenarios. You are a resourceful, hyper-organized professional who gets bored unless you are handling multiple workstreams, and can work within a wide breadth of systems and tasks. You love to create and utilize elegant tools, templates, and processes that improve efficiency and accuracy.

You can confidently interface with internal and external stakeholders, presenting strategies and delivering performance updates. You have experience collaborating closely with fellow leaders to influence company-wide decisions and steer the organization towards its goals.

This position is remote. Our team is distributed across the U.S. and works remotely.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities

You will lead and oversee fund management activities across MDF’s family of funds, ensuring effective execution of investment strategies, liquidity management, and portfolio management. You will manage a high-performing team of fund managers and associates, refine tools and processes, and deliver exceptional client-partner and investor experiences.  This role also includes ensuring effective onboarding of new funds onto MDF’s platform, including developing key fund tools.

Team Leadership

  • Develop and execute a strategic vision for key activities within the Fund Management team, including identifying opportunities for business growth and contribution to MDF’s success while fostering resilience and mitigating business risks

  • Improve processes that optimize our ability to manage our funds, including leveraging technology to enhance efficiency and data integrity, and improve transition times from step to step

  • Collaborate with functional teams to minimize friction and maximize delight for internal and external stakeholders

  • Demonstrate effective leadership, uniting teams around a shared mission and leading individuals and/or other leaders towards achieving common objectives

Fund & Portfolio Management for Existing Funds

  •  Oversee effective execution of key fund management activities across MDF’s family of funds, including: 

    • Fund terms documentation: Maintain and update fund terms document and related files for all key Fund Management clients; ensure key fund terms, covenants and requirements are updated at all times

    • Investment structuring support: Partner with Investment Management team by reviewing and providing input on investment analysis and deal structuring to ensure it is closely aligned with the objectives and context of funds, including overseeing syndication and credit enhancement strategies for certain funds

    • Deal closings support: Provide content or process guidance to Fund Operations and fund managers on deal closings processes to ensure they run smoothly

    • Liquidity management: Model and manage cash flows, distributions, and commitments, ensuring appropriate liquidity for fund vehicles using existing tools or self-generated tools

    • Data collection & analytics: Partner with MDF’s technology team on data collection tools, methodologies, and process to ensure there is quality financial and impact data to produce reporting and analytics for managed funds

  • Primary responsibility and ownership of portfolio management activities across MDF’s family of funds, collaborating closely with the VP of Fund Services to: 

    • Oversee investment and portfolio performance monitoring, ensuring alignment with fund policies, financial and impact objectives, and covenants 

    • Develop and refine portfolio management processes, tools, and strategies to enhance efficiency and decision-making

    • Prepare fund portfolio updates and present to the MDF Investment Committee on a monthly basis and as needed

    • Ensure our internal teams always have the information about the status of portfolios and portfolio companies, building new reports and processes as necessary, and proactively communicating and managing expectations

    • Support client-partner and investor-facing teams to deliver an excellent experience through responsive portfolio analysis 

    • Manage recurring reporting requirements across funds, including quarterly and annual financial and impact reports

Onboard New Funds to MDF Platform

  • Work alongside the Senior Director of Structured Finance to support the onboarding of funds onto MDF’s platform, including supporting the development of key tools for new funds, including: 

    • Underwriting tools: Collaborate with Investment Management team to develop initial underwriting policies and the technology team to implement tools such as credit memo and term sheet templates

    • Portfolio management tools: Develop initial tools to execute portfolio management such as fund cash flow models, other liquidity management tools, covenant trackers, and portfolio construction reports

    • Data collection templates: Lead fund management team to create borrower / investee financial and impact data collection templates necessary to capture and report on key data requirements of the fund

    • Governance processes: Support the creation of terms of reference and the stand-up of key fund governance committees, including advisory committees

And have a background and skills that include:

  • 10+ years of relevant experience in fund management, portfolio management, traditional investing or impact investing
  • 5+ years of experience in private credit
  • Strong ability to manage a high volume of complex projects that are in different stages through excellent planning, organizational, and time management skills
  • Excellent understanding of investment concepts, financial modeling, and risk management principles to optimize portfolio performance
  • Advanced ability to use Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets to create and manage fund and financial analyses, including the ability to build fund cash flow models of moderate complexity 
  • Proven track record of leveraging data and analytics to inform investment and portfolio management strategies and drive results, and leveraging technology for process efficiency and data integrity
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop teams in an engaging and empowering way that aligns their efforts with the firm’s goals
  • Excellent planning, organizational, and time management skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a high level of professionalism to both internal and external audiences
  • Strong comfort with and demonstrated ability to learn technology tools, such as Google Workspace, Microsoft Suite, business intelligence (PowerBI), project management systems (Asana), and communication systems (Slack)

Preference for candidates that also have one or more of the following:

  • Experience with PowerBi
  • Exposure to, or deep interest in, (impact) investing; this might include experience working directly with nonprofits, social enterprises, philanthropic endeavors, or investment firms 
  • Fluency in another language beyond English
  • Lived experience in our target investment communities, such as communities of color, Native or Indigenous, New American, veteran, low-to-moderate income, or other overlooked and underestimated populations

Compensation and Benefits

This is a Leadership level, Vice President role with an annual salary range of $160,000 – $180,000 per year, plus company incentives, based on your unique skills and experience.
