Calling all Accountants! Are you ready for new opportunities to grow your career with a non-profit organization? Homewise is seeking an accountant to join our finance team. The mission of the Accountant is to support the accounting department with daily processing and account reconciliation as well as support for Homewise.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Accountant is responsible for general accounting functions as follows:

  • Contribute to projects as directed, such as the New Markets Tax Credit (NMTC) Program, revolving loan funds, and other grant awards and programs related to loan production, loan operations, loan servicing, real estate sales, real estate development, and community development business segments.
  • Code invoices to appropriate funds, departments, and accounts.
  • Enter general journal entries supported by an adequate level of documentation.
  • Maintain and reconcile general ledger account balances.
  • Review the work of others and provide backup support for the department.
  • Prepare financial statements and other financial reports required for compliance.
  • Analyze accounting records, including financial statements and other financial reports to assess completeness, accuracy, and conformance to standards defined within the department.
  • Perform monthly balance sheet, income statement, and changes in financial position/budget variance analyses.
  • Assist with audits and other reviews as needed.
  • Assist the CFO, Controller – General Accounting, Controller – Treasury, Senior Accountants, and Capital Strategy Team on appropriate fiscal strategies for the organization.
  • Work closely with other internal departments, including but not limited to loan production, loan operations, loan servicing, real estate sales, real estate development, and community development, to ensure best practices in service provided to customers and investors.
  • Use the Homewise, Inc. STARS database system, MIP, Sage Construction management, Outlook, advanced excel skills, and other electronic tools to provide the best service to customers.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations, policies, and procedures.

Must understand Homewise’s nonprofit financial business model and applicable accounting policies and practices for bank accounts, short and long term investments, loans, mortgages and mortgage-backed securities, real estate development, grants management, and standard accounts.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, finance, economics, mathematics, or a related field (or 4 years of equivalent work experience may be substituted in lieu of a degree in addition to the minimum years of work experience required).
  • 1+ years of financial/accounting/audit or related work experience in a financial institution or mortgage company or the equivalent mix of post Bachelor’s education and experience.

Additional Desirable Credentials 

  • Master’s Degree/MBA in business, finance, economics, mathematics or a related field.
  • CPA, CFA

Work Schedule

  • Ability to travel as needed.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours including evenings or weekends as needed.

Physical Requirements

  • This is largely a sedentary role.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
