Commercial Loan Officer

Company: Homewise, Inc.

Locations: Albuquerque, NM; Santa Fe, NM

Job Function: Lending/Loan Operations

Background

Homewise is a nonprofit, one-stop resource that has helped thousands of New Mexicans become successful homeowners. Since our founding in 1986, we’ve believed homeownership is more than just having a roof over your head – it’s about creating a better, more secure future. When done right, homeownership can reduce housing costs, build long-term wealth, and lead to lasting financial stability. A home of your own is also a place to raise a family, grow tomatoes, adopt a pet, or grill a burger – all while investing in your future. Since our founding in 1986, we’ve helped thousands of people become homeowners – many for the first time in their family history. We are dedicated to making New Mexico a better, more affordable place to live. We understand there are numerous factors that influence whether New Mexicans can thrive in their communities, many of which are deeply interconnected – from education to housing affordability. That’s why we collaborate with local governments, businesses, and organizations to advance policies and initiatives that expand homeownership across the state.

Summary

Reports to: Chief Financial Officer

Classification: Full-time, Exempt

About the Role
The Commercial Loan Officer is Homewise’s face in the community lending world — the person New Mexico small business owners, nonprofit leaders, and community developers turn to when they need financing that traditional banks can’t provide. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, you’ll own every stage of the relationship: sourcing deals, analyzing credit, presenting to the Loan Review Committee, and managing the portfolio long after closing. The role suits someone who enjoys all sides of commercial lending — analytical, relational, and presentational — and sees each as different ways of serving the same mission: building thriving communities across New Mexico.

You’ll Be a Great Fit If:

  • You know how to look at a business rather than a person, and you understand that the questions are different.
  • You can analyze a business the whole way through — reviewing financial statements, tax returns, cash flow projections, and balance sheets; evaluating whether the assumptions behind the projections are reasonable; and calculating the ratios that tell the real story.
  • You know when to structure a deal differently, when to add a guarantor, when to substitute collateral, and when the right answer is no.
  • You can present a credit memo to a committee and defend it.
  • You’re a business developer at heart.
  • You take the long view. Commercial lending relationships play out over years — through forbearances, restructures, collateral changes, payoffs — and you’re prepared to own the whole arc.
  • You’re bilingual in English and Spanish and can build trust and hold serious financial conversations in either language.
  • You own your pipeline, your portfolio, your committee submissions, and your community relationships with minimal supervision.
  • You believe in mission-driven lending.
  • You’re detail-oriented in data and believe clean data is what makes you credible to investors and to committee.

Responsibilities

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Sourcing new commercial lending opportunities through direct prospecting, referral networks, community partnerships, and existing client relationships.
  • Conducting initial consultations, gathering documentation — business plans, financial statements, tax returns, contracts, due diligence materials — and evaluating program fit.
  • Performing comprehensive credit analysis: reviewing business and personal financials, developing cash flow analysis, calculating credit ratios, and assessing collateral and guarantor support.
  • Structuring loans appropriately for purpose, repayment source, and risk profile, and preparing high-quality credit approval memoranda.
  • Presenting loan recommendations to Homewise’s Loan Review Committee and exercising independent judgment on approvals, denials, or alternative structures.
  • Managing commercial loans throughout the loan term — including insurance compliance, forbearance requests, payoffs, restructures, collateral substitutions, and collections.
  • Preparing compliance reports, budgets, expenditure analyses, and funding requests for investors, and maintaining accurate portfolio and pipeline data in Salesforce and other designated systems.
  • Building relationships with small business owners, nonprofit leaders, referral partners, and community stakeholders across New Mexico, and representing Homewise as a resource for commercial lending.
