Summary

The Vice President of Talent & DEI (“VP Talent & DEI”) will undertake a critical role in EFF’s efforts to permanently transform financial and educational access for under-resourced communities. Reporting to the COO, the VP Talent & DEI will own all aspects of our talent function. They will codify and articulate best-in-class hiring, professional development, culture-building, and human resources strategies and systems. The ideal candidate will possess deep experience in talent leadership with fast-growing, mission-oriented organizations and serve as a relentless champion of our team’s diversity, equity, and inclusion values.

Responsibilities

The VP Talent & DEI will be responsible for:

  • Talent Strategy & Acquisition: 
    • Working with EFF leadership to develop a cohesive strategy for hiring and developing a long-term, high-functioning, growth-oriented team.
    • Hiring at least 2 to 3 roles per year to meet personnel needs for all of the org’s functional areas (lending, school support, capital raising, strategy, and operations).
    • Network with organizational stakeholders and partners to support EFF in building strategic talent pipelines.
    • Advising leadership and individual team members throughout role creation and hiring processes.
    • Designing and managing employee on-boarding processes in conjunction with role managers.
    • Owning recruitment efforts for cross-organization “Education Finance Analyst” program that recruits and trains early-stage finance professionals from underrepresented backgrounds.
  • Professional Development:
    • Refining EFF’s performance management processes, implementing review cycles, and supporting team members’ capacity to give and receive effective feedback.
    • Designing and/or contracting external parties to deliver PD opportunities and coaching that promotes high-quality managerial practices.
    • Identifying PD and other targeted learning opportunities for individual team members.
  • Team Culture & Staff Engagement:
    • Developing systems and protocols to support a healthy, excellence-oriented culture with equity and inclusion at its core.
    • Deploying tools to assess and strengthen team culture, including staff pulse checks and summative surveys.
    • Elevating EFF’s mission and values as driving forces behind EFF’s work and prospective candidates’ interest in roles with the fund.
    • Building norms and practices to celebrate our team and team members, their work, and contributions to our mission.
  • Diversity, Equity & Inclusion: 
    • Owning all talent-focused elements of EFF’s multiyear DEI Strategic Plan with the goal of fostering practices undergirded by equity, inclusion, and anti-racism.
    • Working with external consultants to refine and advance team DEI learning scope and sequence.
    • Seeking out and recommending opportunities for additional learning and exploration of DEI topics related to EFF’s mission to promote racial and socioeconomic equity.
  • Human Resources:
    • Working with COO and VP Finance to set strategy for compensation structures and promotion tracks.
    • Consistently reviewing labor market patterns to monitor and maintain EFF’s ability to attract and retain top-notch talent.
    • Managing PEO and all benefits processes; including annual benefits selection and requests related to worker’s comp, health insurance, and employee leave.
    • Ensuring EFF remains in compliance with all applicable HR regulations.
    • Managing any HR challenges that arise; including performance improvement, grievances, and employee off-boardings.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • 10-15+ years of overall professional experience; 5+ years in talent leadership roles
  • Experience managing talent strategy and systems at startups, nonprofits, CDFIs, and/or charter schools
  • Unyielding commitment to EFF’s mission to ameliorate educational, financial, and racial inequities
  • Demonstrated leadership owning diversity, equity, and inclusion strategy and initiatives
  • Ability to both “go big” with innovative ideas & initiatives and “get in the grain” with operationalization
  • Enjoy working in a fast-paced, sometimes ambiguous atmosphere
  • Superb listening skills and ability to form coalitions/rally disparate opinions to achieve a common objective
  • High degree of integrity and authenticity and a good sense of humor
  • Willingness to travel 10-15% of the time

Compensation and Benefits

Compensation & Benefits

  • $150,000 – $170,000 annual base salary
  • Performance-based bonus of up to 10% of base salary
  • Excellent benefits, including: health, life, dental, and disability insurance coverage; a 6% 401k match; remote office and fitness stipends/perks; and unlimited PTO.
