Position Summary
The Senior Accountant reports to the Chief Financial and Administrative Officer and is responsible for the accuracy of financial transactions and records related to the expense cycle. This includes proper classification, authorization, and compliance with internal policies and in alignment with Generally Accepted Accounting Principle (GAAP) and Government Auditing Standards (GAS).
An ideal candidate will understand fund accounting and can analyze trends and identify variances in financial forecast and reporting. The individual would meet deadlines and honor commitments. They would have the ability to analyze systems and processes and implement improvements that achieve greater accuracy and efficiency.
Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide oversight for expense transactions, including travel, corporate credit cards, and the accurate processing of invoices, wire transfers and other expense payments.
- Develop and maintain financial policies and procedures related to purchasing and procurement. Provide training and support for systems and procures. Introduce and implement changes in processes that create efficiency, improve control, and make the best use of resources.
- Assist with budget, forecast, and special reporting. Analyze and monitor expense trends, identifying potential risks and opportunities.
- Work closely with our People & Culture staff to verify the accuracy of payroll, taxes, benefits, and other accruals related to salaries and compensation expenses. Help improve information flow and integration of ADP and NetSuite.
- Complete legal registrations, regulatory filings, and maintain records and support required for legal, audit and government purposes. Assists with year-end audit, and informational tax return preparation.
- Support risk management efforts across the enterprise, that help mitigate risks and protect the organization from losses. Maintain and improve policies and support best practices, as part of a comprehensive strategy that includes property and liability risk coverage.
- Other projects and duties as assigned by the CFAO.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, or a related field; advanced degree and/or CPA a plus.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience, with at least 3 years in a non-profit organization.
- Understanding of non-profit public and private funding and restricted donations.
- Proficiency in financial software (NetSuite, ADP, Bill.com) with advanced Excel skills.

Requirements
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Occasional travel to attend in-person meetings and/or participate in Trail activities.
- Flexibility to work extended hours during peak season or special event periods.
- Remote workstations will require reliable, high-speed internet access.
- Must be able to communicate information and ideas so others will understand.
- While performing the duties of the job, the employee may occasionally be required to lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
Compensation and Benefits
Additional Details
- Annual salary range: ($73k – $86k).
- Location: Hybrid position, Harpers Ferry, WV. Consideration for candidates located within one of the 14 A.T. states.
