Summary

The Director of National Community Development Real Estate (CDRE) Underwriting is responsible for ensuring thorough and complete analysis of lending opportunities, while ensuring compliance with risk appetite, credit policy and underwriting guidelines. The Director of National CDRE Underwriting reports to SVP of CDRE. This position manages a team of 3-5 Underwriters, Senior Loans Associates & Loan Associates and supports the National Lending Programs and each region of the CDRE team. Successful incumbents will possess strong credit and impact area expertise in commercial transactions, have excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong management/coaching skills, superior process management and operational effectiveness skills, strong decision-making skills and is a results-oriented team player.

 

Responsibilities

Management & Tactical Strategy

  • Assist with strategic and tactical planning for Momentus market sectors.
  • Manage regular 1:1 meeting with direct reports.
  • Recruit, manage, develop, train, and retain underwriting staff and other team members as appropriate.
  • Ensure development of underwriting staff and support of the CDRE team.
  • Partner with Credit department to review deals, monitor portfolio limits and keep policies and product grids updated.
  • Collaborate with HR on CDRE training needs.  Ensure appropriate Training activities and development plans are in place for staff.
  • Partner with Portfolio Management to improve handoffs and coordination, training on new products, etc.
  • Manage development program in preparation of advancement to the Loan Officer, Business Development Officer, Portfolio Manager or Underwriter.
  • Participate in recruiting activities to ensure quality candidate pools.
  • Oversee and manage staff development activities; improve overall team performance by goal setting, assessing performance and communicating performance objectives.
  • Maintain a pipeline of teams work;
  • Allocate projects to ensure training goals and origination production goals.
  • Participate in meetings with CDRE SVP, Directors CDRE and CDRE Managers; and weekly meetings with CDRE team.
  • Manage regular 1:1 meeting with direct reports.
  • Identify training needs within the team and coordinate training with other CDRE Members.
  • Ensure good communication within other CDRE groups, and share information with team members.

Loan Origination Production 

  • Review all deals coming through national pipeline prior to submission to SVP of CDRE & SVP of Credit with individual credit approval authority in later part of 2023.
  • Originate, underwrite and close loan transactions and work with Loan Associates on these transactions when possible as part as their development.
  • Assist the CDRE team in the structuring of complex transactions, including serving as a reviewer during the screening process in coordination with Business Development Officers, Loan Officers and Directors. Develop tools as needed.
  • Attend industry trade conferences and assist with other strategies to promote products and services.
  • Cultivate and maintain certain key strategic relationships.

 

Quality Underwriting

  • Ensure quality of underwriting including identification of strengths, weaknesses, minimize credit exceptions and recommend appropriate mitigation strategies for lending opportunities.
  • Ensure appropriate application of credit policy & guidelines in analysis and address escalations to appropriate party.
  • Review underwriting, credit memo and credit analysis to ensure thorough and complete underwriting prior to submission to appropriate party.
  • Review simple underwriting tasks completed by Underwriters, Senior Associates & Loan Associates for completeness and underwriting quality.
  • Identify and elevate underwriting credit concerns as soon as detected.
  • Make recommendations on credit approval items to improve or enhance deal structure when appropriate.
  • Participate as requested/needed in deal discussions prior to submission of prescreen or credit committee.

 

Underwriting Process Management and Data Integrity

  • Partner with technology, the lab, programs to improve our process and efficiencies.
  • Assign and manage workload team in conjunction with SVP & Directors for prioritization.
  • Ensure adherence to standardized processes and credit guidelines.
  • Ensure team is meeting all established Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
  • Continuous review of procedures, processes, and guidelines with a keen focus on process improvement and efficiency.
  • Leverage workload management tools/reports for appropriate coaching to CDRE for production & quality metrics.
  • Assist with developing new lending products, drafting guidelines and other materials to grow impact and loan production.
  • Monitor and review underwriting to ensure product is right the first time.
  • Understand and support data integrity of CDRE to minimize issues.

Requirements

Professional Skills, Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or advanced degree in business or public administration, finance or related field preferred. Education level will be considered on a holistic basis considering both education and work experience.
  • 8-10 years of underwriting and/or lending experience with a minimum of 2-3 years of leadership experience.
  • Strong proficiency in a PC environment using Google, Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, and Salesforce is required. The ability to learn and adapt to a changing IT environment is required.
  • Candidates should have demonstrated strong commitment to the Momentus mission.
  • Previous experience with Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) is a plus.

Position is remote, but our headquarters are in Arlington, VA. and  San Diego, Ca.

Compensation and Benefits

$144,637.00 To 159,100.00 Annually
